Long Island University, often abbreviated LIU, is a private, co-educational, nonsectarian institution of higher education in the state of New York, United States, founded in 1926, first starting with an initial enrollment of just 312 students. Since then, it has continuously grown, currently having an enrollment estimated at a number of nearly 24,449 students.
The university offers today 590 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs and certificates within two main campuses and four branch campuses. The first main campus is CW Post Campus, located in Brookville, NY, named after the founder of the Post Cereal Company Charles William Post, located in Brookville in Nassau County, New York. It provides undergraduate and graduate degree programs in areas such as: Accountancy, Business, Education, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Computer Science, Health Professions and Nursing, Library and Information Science, Public Service, and Visual and Performing Arts. The second main campus is Brooklyn Campus, recognized by the New York Times as being one of the most diverse in the U.S., and the branch campuses are: Rockland, Westchester, Brentwood, and Riverhead that offer graduate degree and advance certificate programs, only the Brentwood campus offering a bachelor's degree program.
Long Island University has two athletics teams: the Blackbirds, at the Brooklyn campus, who compete in NCAA Division I, and the Pioneers at the C.W. Post campus, who compete in NCAA Division II in several sports. In 2009, the C.W. Post men's lacrosse team won its second straight NCAA Division II National Championship and the C.W. Post women's lacrosse team won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2007. The Blackbirds men's basketball team won the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in 1936.
Long Island College has produced thousands of alumni, many of them being appointed Notable Alumni.
